Blog for Tuesday 16th April 2024

Yahee! Today is my man’s birthday – Ken turns eighty-one years old today! Hip-hip-hurray! Shoo, we are both adding on a serious amount of years in our lives, and yet, I still feel as if I have not lived for THAT long!

My body maybe crumbling, but the little girl inside me is still bouncing around looking for fun and inspirations!

Lat night I woke up just before eleven o’clock as there was a rowdy storm overhead, so I got up to make sure all the windows were shut in the shed, ass I did not fancy wading through puddles of water everywhere in the morning! The storm put on a wonderful display with flashing lightning flickering across the inky black velvet of the night sky, and the deep throated grumbling and growling of the thunder overhead. Oh! I love storms!

This morning, once it was light enough for me to see outside, the pastures looked washed and ready for a new day of sunshine.

I woke Ken up at nine and then at ten o’clock to say, “Happy Birthday!” – hey, I have been waiting since four o’clock this morning to do that and that was a lesson in patience by itself! We are going into Port Macquarie this morning to celebrate his birthday. I want to buy him a nice pair of shoes and take him out to lunch too.

As we left the farm far too late and we had to call in at the doctor’s rooms, as Ken had to have another Driver’s Eye Test done to keep his Diver’s Licence we did not get to buy Ken’s shoes. He was not at all perturbed about that but I was as I like to give him his gift on his special day!

Ken wanted to rather have lunch at the Wauchope Country Club and get his shoes another day. So, as it is his special day we went there for lunch.

Ken’s choice for his lunch was the seafood basket and I had a lamb cutlet with veggies which I thoroughly enjoyed. Ken also enjoyed his meal by the look of his almost licked-clean platter!

Neither of us wanted dessert and I suggested that I could buy us a Magnum ice cream on our way out of Wauchope at the Timbertown IGA, but Ken suggested we rather get a tub of ice cream, as it would keep cold and neither of us really had room for a Magnum right then!

As we got to our Highway gate the rain that had been pelting down stopped, which allowed us to get out of my car and into the ute’ without too much sogginess happening.

I drove the ute’ across the river and then when I went to drive through the bottom gate the ute’ was slipping and sliding and Ken was yelling instructions and asking me what on earth I was doing, so I got out the ute' (yes-yes very tight lipped I must admit) and told him to drive the ute then!

Rats! He did! I could have kicked the ute’ very hard for that betrayal. Anyway a little further up the road Ken got us stuck – well and truly and the ute’ refused to go forwards or backwards, so Ken had to go and fetch the tractor to pull us out. I remained very silent.

Then, Ken discovered that the ute’s wheel hubs had been unlocked – something we never do on the farm, but only when we leave the farm, so it was the last thing we had thought of! Hallelujah! No need for the tractor, just the wheel hubs to be locked, and off we sailed up to the top shed, not so tight lipped anymore!

Ken has received so many phone calls from all our children and some of the grandchildren today – or they have texted him to wish him a ‘Happy Birthday!’ He also has received many more texts from family and friends – so he must feel very loved by us all.

We had 6.5mm of rain last night and I think we may get a little more tonight, if the storms around us get to us. At the moment they seem to be doing a tap dance around us – too far north or too far south to get to us, but we get the odd shower.

What lesson did I learn today?  To take a deep breath and remain silent when my husband is instructing me on what or how to drive, because you are obviously lack the proper driving skills!

What am I grateful for today? That it was the ute’s hubs being unlocked that were the reason for the ute’ slipping and sliding when I was driving, and not my lack of driving skills!

My saying for today is …
