Blog for Saturday 5th September 2026
Yahee! It is Kerry’s birthday today – Kerry’ being our eldest daughter (who lives in South Africa) and early this morning I sent her a ecard and will hopefully speak to her later today, as South Africa is eight hours behind Australian time.
I was up and out of bed at four o’clock and there was Pumpkin (Paddy’s cat) sitting waiting alongside my laptop on the dining room table, for me to feed her. I swear she has her own internal alarm clock set for four o’clock!
I fed said kitty cat and she came for some loves and scratches before heading back upstairs to my old studio and where she considers it to be her home now.
I had my Quiet Time – well it was a little noisy as the rooster saw the light go on and then felt obliged to crow and crow and crow to let one and all know that he too was awake and wished for everyone else to be too!
I am allowing myself a few days grace and then on Monday I will get stuck into trying to sort more of the mess out which we left behind for Paddy – poor guy! What a nightmare. I think we must come up a little more frequently until it is all sorted out, given away or chucked out!
The weathermen say that today is going to be really warm – up to 29℃! Now, that IS warm! But I honestly love the heat far more than the cold weather so am happy for it to make an appearance once more.
I am looking forward to organizing my little garden in East Gosford when we get back home as spring has sprung and I need to catch up.
This morning is a slow morning as Ken and Raafie are both still fast asleep and it is well after nine o‘clock, the little sloths. I will sit outside in the sunshine and watch the rooster-with-attitude and the guinea fowl that never cease to amuse me with their crazy antics and maybe read my book.
Then is will be shower time, and time to get dressed for our lunch date with our ex-South African friends – and for old times’ sake (well, actually because Paddy has the ute’!) we will cross the river on the quad bike as the river is shallow at the moment, to get to my car parked on the other side, and then on and into Wauchope!
Okay, so back to the bang and bounce across the river and then onwards to Wauchope.
It was so nice to meet up again with Lindie (Frank is in Brisbane for the weekend for Father’s Day with his sons); Hester and Ernest; Adri and Frik; Jacques, Hannelene and Maree her Mum who had lunch with us at the Bago Tavern, Unfortunately, Mariaan and Tinus could not be there today – but next time!
The food was delicious but Lindie, Ken and I had to wait a bit long for our meals, but they were worth it in the end!
I was going to do some grocery shopping but could see that Ken was beyond tired so I decide to head for home and I can do the shopping after church tomorrow instead.
Ken was not feeling that kosher by the time we got back home – maybe the heat – so he went to lie down, and I put a fan blowing on him to cool him down as it was a really hot day and let him sleep. I fed the birds, one cat and four dogs tonight.
Neither Ken or I will need food tonight both of us had to ask for a doggie bag at lunch time – Ken for his pasta dish and me all the squid I could not eat. They gave me an enormous helping of squid – which was far too delicious to have left behind.
Once home I phoned Kerry’ for her birthday and caught her as she came back into their bush camp after delivering breakfast to the campers staying there for the weekend. We managed to have a nice long chat before she had to get more food ready for those nine guys camping there!
I sat outside with the rooster-with-attitude trying ever so hard to terrify me without success. Bird brain! I sat and watched the sun slide down the sky and then hide behind the distant hills for the night.
What lesson did I learn today? To live in the moment.
What am I grateful for today? All the good friends that we have made here in Australia over the twenty-seven years that we have lived here and there.
