blog for Sunday 16th August 2026

I shot out of bed like a cannon ball out of a cannon! Whoosh!

I was worried that I might oversleep and then I would not get the pork shoulder cooked in time for tonight’s Worship Evening, that our church is hosting for all the local Baptist churches.

I needn’t have worried, as I got out of bed just before four o’clock, which gave me plenty of time to cook the pork to perfection.

I had my Quiet Time, uploaded my blog and had a very quick squint at my emails. Most of them I can answer later so there was no urgency.

Oh hallelujah! Hester sent me some more chapters of her book – what a lovely surprise! I will read them later to delay the delight!

It was then time for me to shower and get myself dressed for church. Ken had showered last night so I let him sleep in a little later this morning before getting him up for church.

I hope that the pork will continue to simmer nicely whilst we are at church in the morning, and that I will be able to shred it (or pull it, I believe is the correct term) in plenty of time before delivering it for this evening’s meal at church.

We got home from church at about eleven-ish, I think.

Ken went to have a snooze, and I checked on the pork which was cooking beautifully, and the aroma filled our little home with all things delicious and tempting to the nostrils!

I settled myself in my study and did some more cross-stitching, which is becoming rather addictive, I may add!

Because this cross-stitching is done on such fine fabric it demands a LOT of patience – so here I am learning yet another one of those lessons on patience! You would think I would have learnt that lesson by now! I guess, some of us are a lot slower than others!

At half past three I shredded/pulled the pork and it fell apart ever so easily and tasted wonderful. I was so pleased with my first effort of making this dish – simple but very tasty.

At just after four o’clock Ken and I set off for the church – well, not exactly – we headed for the Green Point Baptist College – the school run by our church, and this is the school that five of our grandchildren attended. The evening was being held in the school’s hall. There we took my slow cooker and tipped it into a rather large slow cooker.

Food Table is beginning to be set up.

As some people do not eat pork there were slow cookers of beef and chicken too, (all meals were strictly gluten free) plus huge bowls of coleslaw. Little cardboard burger containers were used, and one received a large, soft hamburger bun with pulled meat-of-your-choice topped with coleslaw – and it was very tasty. All this was served free to those who wanted it.

While everything was being set up the Praise Team were practicing – loudly – and Ken battled with that, so we did not stay. Plus, I was a little nervous at driving on a wet and rainy night in the dark.

We left just as the light of the day was fast disappearing and I was so glad we did, but I would also have loved to have stayed on for the evening of worship. I am sure I will have an opportunity to do that another day though.

Once home it was good to be back inside as it was wet and chilly out. I soon was in my ‘jamas and with my full length Oodie – the one Paddy gave me for Mother’s Day a year or two ago.

Wonderful! All snug and warm again.

I hopped into bed nice and early and watched “The Block” on my phone in bed, before snuggling down and going to sleep.

What lesson did I learn today? Can you believe it – more patience!

What am I grateful for today? That my meal of pulled pork turned out well.

My saying for today is …
